From Where There Is No Return
Alberto García-Alix
UCCA Nave
2010.09.25 - 2010.11.12

From where there is no return is a selection of 80 photographs from the celebrated Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix’s ambitious project, De donde no se vuelve.

This photographic narrative, spanning more than 30 years, records the composition, light, shadow and poetics of life in Madrid, Paris and Beijing. Using photography as his journal, Alberto García-Alix takes viewers on a trip to the other side of life to capture, with great dignity and humanity, people and places rarely portrayed in art. The subjects passing before his lens are people and places he encounters every day: himself, his friends, his street acquaintances, the pavement and the cement buildings where he once lived. His camera brings sex workers, tattoo parlors, transvestites, lovers, enemies, battles and kisses together in one long poetic journey through his life.

With his camera as a constant companion, García-Alix maintains the integrity of photography, shooting with film and lovingly developing each photograph by hand in his darkroom. Every image is an unbridled portrait of the artist’s life; every print reflects the intimate chemistry by which he develops that image. Combined in this solo exhibition at UCCA, they form a singular and evocative witness to history.

“Curated By Liu Wei”
Wang Yuyang & Hu Xiangqian
UCCA White Cube & Black Box
2010.09.25 - 2010.11.07

This September, as part of the UCCA Curated By… series, Liu Wei will introduce Wang Yuyang and Hu Xiangqian, two young artists whose creative mediums are as uniquely experimental and varied as those of the curator himself.

Wang Yuyang works with installations, photography, video and painting; he currently teaches at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, his alma mater. His works take a humorous and fictional approach to exploring concepts of artificial reality and the relationship between cognition and perception. For his exhibit at UCCA, he will present a group of "breathing" sculptures in the form of household items such as televisions and air conditioners.

Hu Xiangqian enjoys incorporating aspects of daily life into his practice and transgressing the separation between art and everyday life. For his exhibit at UCCA, he plans to go into the wild with a "Survival Guide" and attempt to survive sensibly by employing the impractical skills illustrated in his survival guide. The artist will document the experience on video in order to share his adventures with UCCA exhibition-goers.

These two works of humor and absurdity by Wang Yuyang and Hu Xiangqian will be shown in the same space, UCCA’s White Cube & Black Box.

Blue Room
Yang Shaobin
UCCA Middle Room
2010.09.25 - 2010.11.12

Yang Shaobin is an artist famous for his unique abstract realist paintings. This September, he will transform UCCA’s Middle Room into a monochromatic sea of true-blue landscapes and portraits inspired by global climate change. Centered around the themes of "invisible" violence and confrontation, these paintings saturate the room with uncertainty. The artist plans to cover two opposing walls with 38 portraits of people (both well-known and anonymous) and two adjacent walls with deep blue landscapes of infinity.

Yang Shaobin's Blue Room is a series of paintings whose dimensions have been meticulously customized to fit the UCCA space. Viewers will find themselves surrounded by oversized portraits, each nearly two meters high. On one side, we see an array of political leaders involved in the recent global climate talks; on the other, portraits of refugees living on the margins of survival or struggling with the effects of climate change. Two landscape paintings, one of a black hole and another of the eye of a storm, slowly draw the viewer into acknowledging the immeasurable and violent uncertainty of this Blue Room.
